Procurement tips for the perfect printed lanyards

Your lanyard needs to be used in the real world such as conferences, workplaces, schools and healthcare.

Step 1. How your lanyard will be used

Start with how your custom printed lanyards will be used. Examples might be; one-day event, daily staff IDs, access control, visitors, or high-risk environments. This determines the best width, attachments and safety features. If people scan cards constantly, a quick-release buckle matters. If there’s snag risk, breakaway safety matters. Tell us the setting and we’ll spec the lanyard to suit.

Common lanyard types include dye sublimation, screen printed and woven, with dye sublimation printing being the most popular.

Step 2. Choosing the right printing method

Choose printing based on your artwork. Screen printing suits bold logos, text and spot colours at volume. Dye sublimation gives full colour, edge-to-edge printing for gradients, patterns and photo-quality detail. Heat transfer works well for full colour in specific areas, like logos, names or roles, when you don’t need all-over print. Send us your artwork and we’ll recommend the cleanest route.

The most common lanyard size length in the UK is 90cm.

Step 3. What the width and feel should be

The width of the lanyard affects comfort and readability. 10mm is lightweight and common for events. 15mm is the safe all-rounder for staff IDs and visitor passes. 20–25mm gives maximum full colour branding space and looks more uniform-grade for venues and front-of-house teams. If you’re using bulky holders or reels, a wider strap often feels better in daily use.

Primary lanyard attachments include passes, ID holders and badge wallets.

Step 4. Choosing suitable clips and attachments

Pick fittings and attachments based on real use. Dog clips suit most ID holders and passes. Add a quick-release buckle when people detach keys or scan access cards regularly. Add a safety breakaway anywhere there’s snag risk (education, healthcare, manufacturing, busy venues). If you’re using plastic badge reels or a specific holder type, tell us as matching the fitting prevents twisting and unreadable badges.

Step 5. Submitting your artwork and getting it proofed

A clear full colour proof prevents expensive mistakes. Vector logos (AI/EPS/PDF) print cleanest, but high-resolution files can work. Confirm brand colours (Pantone if available) and whether you want one-sided or double-sided printing. On the proof, check logo size, repeat spacing and readability at arm’s length. For names (often heat transfer), supply one final list.

Step 6. Quantity, lead times and getting them delivered

Quantity and deadlines shape the best route. Printed lanyards price best on production runs, so share quantity early. For accurate timings, tell us the event date and delivery postcode, plus any must-have fittings. Most delays come from late approvals or changing the spec mid-way. If the date is fixed, we’ll recommend a print method and build most likely to land on time.

Commonly asked questions

If you can provide the quantity, deadline, delivery, preferred width, print method (if known), fittings (clip/buckle/breakaway), and your artwork, we’ll provide the quote If you don’t know the spec yet, we can consult with you and suggest the most suitable setup for your needs.

Samples are available in most cases at an agreed fee. In many cases, we can help with pre-production visuals and, where appropriate, samples. The most reliable way to prevent surprises is approving a clear proof against your artwork and spec before production starts.

We can work to your brand requirements. The achievable accuracy depends on the print method and material we use for your lanyards. If colour is critical, tell us early and share brand references such as Pantone swatches so we can recommend the best production route.

It really depends on the environment and policy. Many organisations prioritise safety (breakaway) and practicality (easy access, clear ID display). If you tell us the setting and any compliance rules you follow, we’ll recommend a spec that fits.

It will if the artwork and spacing are set correctly. Readability depends on logo size, repeat spacing, contrast and lanyard width. With dye sublimation we can achieve a very fine print. If legibility matters we’ll set the artwork up for real-world viewing, not just the proof.
